The Mummy MOT has been designed by pelvic health physiotherapist Maria Elliot. Maria works on Harley Street and is a leading clinician in the field of Women’s Health. The Mummy MOT is available throughout the UK and Ireland but as yet, Sally is the only physiotherapist who has been trained by Maria and is offering this specialist assessment in Northern Ireland. It is a detailed postnatal physiotherapy assessment of the abdominal and pelvic area. It will check your posture, breathing, tummy gap and pelvic floor strength (including an internal examination of the pelvic floor musculature if the patient is happy to have it). Following the assessment an appropriate and safe exercise programme will be prescribed. Your exercise programme and duration of your treatment is very much down to your own personal goals and post natal issues. The Mummy MOT is suitable from 6 weeks post natal but some mummies have come with problems many years after delivery – it’s never too late!
Integrated post natal physiotherapy and functional fitness
So what’s normal and what’s not after giving birth?
- It’s not normal to leak when you cough or run
- It’s not normal to have pain during sex
- It’s not normal to have ongoing pelvic pain or debilitating constipation
- It’s not normal to have a gap in your tummy where your muscles remain very weak and don’t support your core or organs
Having had 2 caesarian sections myself and having treated many ladies suffering with low back, abdominal and pelvic pain after vaginal births, I am all too aware of the problems that arise post natally and the lack of acknowledgement of these issues. In France every lady is seen by a physiotherapist at 6 weeks post natal and receives between 10 and 20 sessions of rehabilitation. As mums we need to be physically fit to cope with the demands that come with having young children. In theory, any woman who has given birth needs an assessment and an exercise programme to get themselves back on track.
The Mummy MOT is a 1 hour long assessment and costs £75. This includes your exercise programme / videos which can be e-mailed to you along with nutritional advice and self-care strategies.
